The Mobile Edge in Veterinary Medicine

The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine is redefining animal healthcare in Arizona, thanks to their ingenious mobile surgery unit.

This isn't just a vehicle; it's a lifeline on wheels, equipped with everything necessary for various medical procedures. Picture a 53-foot trailer, transformed into a full-fledged veterinary clinic, journeying to places where care is most needed.

Their recent trip to Casa Grande's Pinal County Animal Care and Control was a game-changer. Over a week, the team performed 20 vital spay and neuter surgeries. "Each of these surgeries marks a stepping stone towards a better life for these animals," Katrina Rodrigues, the Deputy Director at Pinal County, shared. This effort is pivotal in accelerating adoptions and reducing shelter wait times.

Jacquie Edie, the project manager overseeing the surgical and anesthesia department at the college, emphasized the trip's seamless success. This mobile clinic is not only crucial for on-the-ground services but also plays a key role in veterinary education. Here, students from their first semester get hands-on surgical experience, progressing from basic skills to real-life procedures under expert supervision.

The unit itself is a marvel of veterinary technology. It houses kennels, a pre-medical area, a basic lab, and a central surgical suite equipped with the latest tools, including advanced veterinary fluid warmers and anesthesia machines. It's a self-sufficient unit with its own refrigeration and water system, prepared for a myriad of veterinary tests and procedures. While it's not designed for highly specialized surgeries, it's perfect for routine operations and diagnostics.

For students, this experience is invaluable. "Working in this unit pushes them to think innovatively, preparing them for a future where mobile veterinary services could be the norm," Edie notes.

The team is already planning more service trips and exploring ways to engage the unit in community-focused missions, making veterinary care more accessible.🐾🚐
