Because infusion pumps squeeze the tubing in order to infuse fluids into a patient, platelets can be damaged. Typically it is recommended to use a filter and specific tubing when using infusion pumps for blood products. The Hospira Plum A+ does the least amount of damage to platelets when using the proper tubing cartridge specific for blood.
